GotPhoto: A Layered Defence

Why We Won’t Give You False Promises on Protection

James Micklethwait
CEO of GotPhoto

As a photographer, your work is more than just a file. It’s the result of early mornings at the sports field, hours of lighting setup on location at school, and the unique ability to capture a child’s personality in a fraction of a second.

That is why we know that when we talk about image theft, we aren’t just talking about bits and bytes. We are talking about your livelihood.

Recently, the conversation around screenshotting and image theft in volume photography has reached a boiling point. We’ve seen two extremes emerge: one side suggesting you simply “don’t worry about it,” and the other promising “total protection” through software.

As the CEO of GotPhoto, I believe you deserve better than dismissive advice or false promises. You deserve the truth about the technological “arms race” we are in, and a partner who prioritizes your revenue!

At GotPhoto, our goal is to help photographers become more successful. That means not only building great tools, but also helping improve the conditions in which photographers run their business.

The Reality of the Digital Arms Race

The internet was built to share information, not to lock it down. As technology evolves to protect images, technology to bypass those protections evolves even faster. We are currently in a digital arms race:

  • The Rise of AI Removal: Only a few years ago, removing a watermark required a skilled editor. Today, free AI tools can “see” the pixels behind a logo and reconstruct them in seconds.
  • The Operating System Barrier: A significant share of image theft happens on mobile devices. Mobile operating systems are designed to limit what websites can control on a device. This means browser-based galleries cannot reliably block screenshots in the same way native apps sometimes can. This isn’t unique to GotPhoto, it applies across the industry.

If we promised you “unbreakable” protection, we would be lying to you. And in this industry, trust really matters. That said, we have listened to our customers and we are investing in technical solutions which increase friction and discourage photo theft.

Why "Total Protection" Can Be a Bad Business Decision

It is tempting to want to turn your online shop into a fortress. But there is a hidden cost to aggressive protection: The Conversion Tax.

Every layer of friction you add to stop a thief is also a layer of friction for the honest parent who just wants to buy a photo of their child. If a gallery takes too long to load because of heavy encryption, or if a watermark is so thick it obscures the child’s expression, the parent doesn’t try harder to buy. They simply close the tab.

In that scenario, you haven’t just stopped a screenshot. You’ve stopped a sale. Our philosophy is different. We believe in meaningful friction, making it hard to steal, but remarkably easy to buy.

Our Commitment: A Layered Defense

Instead of chasing a single silver bullet, we at GotPhoto are committed to a Layered Defense Strategy. This approach focuses on deterrence and professional integrity without sacrificing your sales:

  1. Platform-Native Deterrence: We have implemented desktop screenshot protection because it is a stable and effective way to reduce high-quality theft in environments we can reliably control. On mobile, we have disabled long-press saving as a first step to reduce easy downloads and continue evaluating ways to strengthen protection within these constraints.
  2. Smart Watermarking: We are moving toward Hybrid Watermarks that combine visual complexity (to confuse AI) with clear copyright language (to deter humans).
  3. The “Path of Least Resistance”: We are obsessively focused on making our checkout experience the fastest in the industry. When a parent can buy a digital download in a couple of easy clicks, the effort of stealing and cropping a low-res screenshot becomes more work than simply owning the high-res original.
  4. Customer Education: We’re moving from “subtle hints” to “clear boundaries.” Our platform will proactively educate every parent on two non-negotiables:
    • The Law: Taking a screenshot or removing a watermark isn’t just a shortcut; it is illegal. We’re making that copyright boundary visible.

    • The Value: A purchase isn’t just for a file; it’s an investment in the local person behind the lens. We’re ensuring parents know that their support is what keeps you in business.

Honesty is the Best Policy

We won’t offer you the magic fix to make you feel better in the short term. We will continue to evaluate what is possible within the constraints of mobile operating systems and AI evolution.

We respect you and your work too much to give you false hope. Instead, we give you a platform that is built to scale, built to convert, and built to protect your business in the real world, not just in a sales pitch.

Because our mission is simple: when photographers succeed, the industry succeeds. And that means building the conditions that allow photographers to thrive over the long term.
